The Seven Golden Secrets Of A Successful Stadium

Introducing Paul Fletcher, by Ken Sharp

Paul Fletcher

I once attended a stadium conference in London with my recorder running like as always. Paul Fletcher was presented as one of the UK’s first Stadiologists. This is how he was introduced:

"Does anybody in the world have more stadium experience than our speaker today?"

He has:

  • Been a football spectator since the age of seven.
  • Played in most of the UK’s stadiums during a 16 year professional career.
  • Represented England on 4 occasions at u23 level.
  • Been commercial manager at a non league football club Colne Dynamoes.
  • As CEO, masterminded the McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield.
  • Received the ‘Building of the Year’ award in 1995.
  • Organised numerous Stadium Rock Concerts.
  • Became CEO at the Reebok Stadium during its conception.
  • Has negotiated 5 major multi-million pound ‘naming rights’ contracts.
  • Been Commercial Director of the new Wembley Stadium.
  • Was CEO at The Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
  • Went on to become Managing Director of Coventry City Football Club.
  • Has negotiated over £100 million in sponsorships.
  • Invented and patented ‘StadiArena’ in 2005.
  • Awarded the MBE for services to football in 2007.
  • 2008 returns to Burnley Football Club as Chief Executive.
  • 2009 Burnley are promoted back into the Premiership after 33 years.

"He can truly be described as a Stadiologist – a stadium specialist".

"Please welcome Paul Fletcher MBE."

"In addition Paul has also helped and advised over 30 other stadium projects both large and small throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the world as a stadium consultant."

"I have had the pleasure of working with Paul on three major stadium projects. In 2001, I was so keen to work with Paul in England, I relocated from Bathurst, Australia with my wife and three children after I had met Paul when he visited The Colonial Stadium in Melbourne (now named the Etihad Stadium), one of my very early projects working on Private Seat Licenses."

"Paul has a clear vision, leads from the front and has a wicked sense of humour, which always makes the job so much more interesting. We worked together on the Ricoh Arena Coventry for a 5-year spell in mid 2000 and ended up sharing a flat in the centre of the cathedral city, as Paul’s wife and family were 120 miles north in Lancashire. But he made sure he was home every weekend.

If there is one person in the world who knows and understands every aspect of a new football stadium it’s Paul Fletcher. He has fought and won most battles with builders, architects, planners and town councillors to ensure a fine building is delivered for what he describes as his ‘most important clients’, football spectators."
